BREASTCHECK URGES LIMERICK WOMEN TO ATTEND FOR FREE MAMMOGRAM

- 08 December 2009

BreastCheck – The National Breast Screening Programme wishes to remind women aged 50 to 64 that it is continuing to provide free breast x-rays (mammograms) to eligible women living in Limerick City.

A BreastCheck mammogram is a simple procedure and the appointment only takes half an hour in total. BreastCheck urges any woman who receives an invitation for a free BreastCheck mammogram to attend her appointment.. Any woman who has already been invited and who did not attend her first appointment will receive a second appointment in the coming weeks.

The aim of screening is to detect early breast cancer. The vast majority of women screened are found to be perfectly healthy, with less than one per cent diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Government-funded screening service is being provided at a BreastCheck mobile digital screening unit located in the grounds of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Mulgrave Street, Limerick. Should the appointment time offered by BreastCheck not suit, invited women are encouraged to contact the BreastCheck Southern Unit on 021 464 9700 to rearrange their appointment.

Women are currently being invited for screening from areas including St Joseph’s Hospital, Lock Quay, Garryowen, Ballinacurra, Wolfe Tone Street, St. Patrick’s Road, Steamboat Quay, O’Connell Avenue, South Circular Road, Roxboro Road, St John’s Square, Edward Street, Prospect, Shannon St, Harveys Quay, Denmark Street and Roxboro Road.

BreastCheck encourages all women aged 50 to 64 living in Limerick City to check that they are on the BreastCheck register by calling Freephone 1800 45 45 55 or checking online at www.breastcheck.ie. Once registered and known to the Programme they will automatically receive an appointment when BreastCheck is screening in their area.
