BreastCheck National Expansion: Phase Two
On May 5th 2005, the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney T.D., issued approval for the placing of a notice in the Official Journal of the European Communities to advertise for the appointment of a Design Team to work up detailed plans for the design and construction of the two new BreastCheck static clinical units, and new symptomatic unit in Galway. The total capital approved amounts to approximately EUR25 million.
The two units - Southern Unit and Western Unit commenced screening women in December 2007 and following initial screening will introduce mobile units.
Details
The Southern Unit is located adjacent to the South Infirmary-Victoria Hospital,
with four associated mobile screening units and will cover Cork, Kerry,
Limerick, Waterford and Tipperary South Riding. An estimated 71,188 women
are in the target population, or 35,594 per annum.
The Western Clinical Unit is located at the rear of University College Hospital Galway, with three associated mobile screening units and will cover Galway, Sligo, Roscommon, Donegal, Mayo, Leitrim, Clare and Tipperary North Riding. 57,588 women are in the target population or 28,794 per annum.
